"Honoring Three Silenced American Poets:
Emily Dickinson, Langston Hughes, & Walt Whitman"

In February of 2003, the White House cancelled a symposium entitled
“Poetry and the American Voice” designed to honor these three great
American poets. The reason given was that “poetry should not be political.”

We invite you to come and hear the work of these great American Poets
who would not be silenced in their own lifetimes.

Featured Readers: Michael Gushue, Kim Schraf, Dan Vera & Craig Wallace.

It was a delightful evening of wonderful poetry.

Sarah Browning is a wonderful poet and community organizer. She has had poems widely published in journals such The New York Quarterly, The Literary Review, and Eclipse. She received the Quadrangle Poetry Award in 2001 and took third place in the Larry Neal Awards for Poetry in 2003. She was founding director of Amherst Writers & Artists Institute, an organization providing creative writing workshops to low-income women and youth, and now works raising money for women playwrights and
filmmakers at The Fund for Women Artists.

Most recently she was coeditor of D.C. Poets Against the War: An Anthology (Argonne House Press, 2003) and coordinates the group of the same name.

2004 Summer Series

These were some GREAT readings.

Good attendance at the last two.
I guess folks were a bit sketchy about an evening of Cicada poems (but they missed out on some GREAT stuff that night).

The Dog night was extremely popular and will no doubt become a tradition. We barely scratched the surface of dog poems that are out there.

The August reading was also a pleasure and the ice cream social afterwards was just right. That night came after what most agreed was one of the HOTTEST days in DC. So it was just what was needed.

Wednesday, November 3, 2004
Guest Poets:
Chris Conlon & Kim Roberts

Influence Poets: Walt Whitman & William Heyen, C.K. Williams

Our first series of guest readers wowed us with their work. We had put a call for poets to come and
read their work alongside the work of poets who had or have influenced them. Given the fact that

this reading took place the day after the election -- the crowd was in a remarkable mood of receptivity.
The selected influence poets were well received.

Guest Poet:
Sandra Beasley

Influence Poets: Cornelius Eady & Lee Young-Lee
Beasley regaled us with some wonderful work influenced by Eady and Young-Lee.
Her own poem cycle on allergies was remarkable and left us all in amazement.
